Dancing in the Dark

Photo Randy Vanderveen A Citie Ballet dancer performing in Jacinto and Love Articulated at the Douglas J Cardinal Performing Arts Centre at Grande Prairie Regional College Saturday Jan. 21/17.

I had the opportunity to photograph Citie Ballet performing at the Douglas J. Cardinal Performing Arts Centre Saturday evening.

It was a fantastic performance which also had dancers from The Academy performing two sessions early in the show.

I was also amazed with how rapidly camera manufacturers have improved the quality of high iso photos taken by available light.

To stop dancers you have to have a fast shutter speed and with the limited light during the performance I was forced to shoot photos at ISO 10,000 f 1.8 at a shutter speed between 1/250 and 1/640 of a second.
I am showing my age when I say I remember when ISO 400 speed film didn't even come close to the quality of these images.

While the tool doesn't make the carpenter and the camera doesn't make the photographer it can sure be a big help to have the right tool for the job and in this case that means a newer model digital camera.

I hope you enjoy the black and white conversions.
